Step by step: Bendera Garland dari Cheater Quilt

Pengaruh Pandemi

Twin Tote Bag

Hello, Fili here!

This week I had a little adventure with a Twin Tote Bag. This bag is different from the previous totes that I made because it's two bags made into one.

The bag has two main bodies with one pocket on each sides and one hidden pocket in the middle. The sewing method is like sewing a twin pouch but with a few modification. The bag has a volume (previous twin pouch that I made is really simple and didn't have any volume). I had some difficulties with the top squares, the zipper made it difficult  to sew on the wrong side. I decided to sew the top corner in the inside and covered it with bias binding (always trust bias binding to help your day!).

That's my little sewing adventure this week, see you next time!

Lunch Box

Hello!

Fili here! I intended to write this post last week but I had to postpone it since we need to prepare our next event. I'm going to talk about our latest finished custom order, a lunch box with thermal lining.

Our customer requested to use a laminated Kokka fabric as the main fabric. It's quite a challenge to sew this one, the laminated fabric wouldn't move forward when I tried to sew it on the machine. I tried a few tricks until  I found that the fabric must be sewn with the wrong side in the bottom or sew the fabrics together with other parts so the laminated side won't stick.

In addition to that, sewing the thermal lining was very challenging. I must resew it several times to make the lining fitted. The thermal lining also looks pretty easy to tear apart, it only consists of a thin aluminium like sheet and some sheer foam. It doesn't have any fibers or grain, so I have to be very careful when sewing it.

This is the photo of the inside:

The lunch box is smaller than the previous one that I made, so I used a single handle on top instead of two handles in the front and back side.

That's it, see you next time!

More Q&A with Fili&Lino

We got some questions from our latest instagram giveaway, and now we're trying to answer all the questions!

1. Are you going to have a tutorial on how to make your plushies/dolls?

Not at the moment. We have a huge list of custom order and Fili isn't really keen on having another plushies in her room.

2. What about your eito song fabric, have you made something from it?

So far only a three panel wallet.

3. How long does it takes for the trial and error before you launched your new model/products?

Depends on the product. Usually within hours for small products (pouches etc), 1-3 days for totes, and more than that for rucksack/backpack. The learning process itself is not stopping there. Usually every time we make the same product, we keep on learning something new on how to make the product much better and efficient.

4. If you find a model that you like somewhere, how do you figure the pattern? Do you buy it and open it?

Please bear in mind that we will never buy someone's product and open it to learn how to make it. Nope. Never. What we do is we just try to figure it out without even touch the model. If we found some model that we like from books or pinterest, we just try figure it ourselves. If we stuck, we try to find the tutorial somewhere online (google is our best friend, and so does pinterest). If we couldn't then we just think, do trial error. Besides, if you've been making bags/wallet/pouches for years, you'll learn that the basic are pretty similar, it's just the small modification here and there that makes it different.

5. What's your flagship product?

Not sure. The recycle? Wallet? Lunch bag? Probably recycle.

6. What makes you different from other crafters out there?

Hmm, we think we're pretty similar with other crafters: we do this because we like it. But we have special interest on the pattern and colours of the fabric. The tone, mix and matching, we put a lot of effort on that area. We are also very strict on deciding what kind of fabric that we're going to buy. We aim to have a more unique pattern. That's why it's pretty hard to find shabby chic/flower fabrics in our products. Probably something fun, quirky sometimes, but not too flashy or too much? We already tried printing our own fabric and the response is pretty good. Hopefully we can have more original print fabric in the near future.

Hope this answers! Feel free to drop any questions on our instagram, facebook, e-mail, and twitter!

Marketday Display Agony

Hola everyone!

So Fili&Lino is going to have a pretty big even in the next three months. Our problem now is the booth display (beside our other main problem: production itself!). I've been lurking all over the web, and I'm in love with wire baskets or wire display. Something like this, this, or this. The problem is, I don't know where to find it in Jakarta! I've been to various shops and nope. The closest thing to these are at Scoop, but the wire basket there is so damn expensive!

And you may already know that IKEA is now open in Jakarta (well, Banten Province to be exact). So I thought, why not try find something there, especially when I pretty much fed up with Ace Hardware and Informa. And I found some stuff that I really like: a brand new RISATORP trolley (it's not even on their cataloge and website yet). Believe me, it's pretty big, not like in the photo. Pretty pricey, it's almost IDR 1 million (80USD) here, but I can imagine it will look pretty nice with our pouches etc. I'm also thinking of having one of their LACK long low table, for additional display if needed.

So, any idea where I can find an affordable wire basket here? And any thought about our product display? Where can I find good quality stuff for display that doesn't kill our bank account?

Bazaar!

Hola!

Fili&Lino here, reporting the bazaar that we just had three weeks ago.

So for the first time, we were at an office bazaar, means a bazaar in a office (duh?) that went for three days. We would like to share some photos and little bit stories behind our first bazaar. Since we knew we're going to be at a bazaar, we already prepared some stocks and (finally!) bought a knock down shelf for product display. In the beginning, we only planned to be at one bazaar, but we ended up being at two different bazaars, with only three days preparation between bazaars!

Without too much talking, here are some photos!

That's us, people!!

That Blue Dress

Hola!

Again, sorry for not updating this blog pretty often. Fili is busy with all the custom order and bazaar preparation while I just came back from three weeks vacation to the eastern part of Indonesia. Amazing place, I recommend you all to visit Flores, East Nusatenggara.

But today I'm not going to talk about my trip. I'm going to talk about the dress that I made. In the beginning, I just wanted to sew something, anything, any project. But after I saw the result, I decided to use the dress to go to my cousin's wedding reception in Bali.

Those two good looking men are my little cousins. They grew up too fast, too fast! And yup, this is the view from the wedding venue, which was exactly on the Nusa Dua beach.

Random Rambling Sunday: Pink & Stripes

Hola!

This is Fili and Lino, doing a combined post for a sewing - recycle project!

Once upon a time, when Lino was just learnt how to sew, she often wonder around op shops (Vinnies and Salvos) to find some bargain fabrics. She found a around 1.5 x. 1.5 m of red white stripe light jersey fabric for only $2. She then combined it with Chinese linen, a lovely fuchsia from Lincraft. Some blog search on how to make an easy dress, voila, this is the result!

Happy New Year 2014!

Dear all,

We are very sorry for the lack of new post in this blog. Somehow both of us ended up being busy with our life, which includes taking care of Filiandlino orders and working in the office. Nevertheless, we are aiming to be more active in 2014 with more blog posts, Etsy and Facebook listings.

But on top of that, from deep down inside, we would like to deliver our deepest gratitude to all our blog readers, fellow crafters and friends who always support us in every moments and occasions.

Happy New Year 2014 from GMT +7.
Hope the new year will bring more creativity, energy, ideas and happiness to us all

Much love,

Fili and Lino

Random Rambling Sunday: String/Strap Closure for Travel Wallet

Hola!

It's not sunday anymore, but better late than never.

So I've made quite a number of travel wallet, and this time, I would like to share another one. But it's different than the previous ones because I used different closure. I tried the string/strap closure with small pendant in the end of the string, similar to Indiana Jones' notebook but with a pendant. It's not that usual, but somehow it makes the wallet looks much more classy and unique, especially when I use the Etching fabric series from Moda.

Photos are taken with my mobile phone, so please bear the crappy quality.

That's all from Lino today.

Cheers!

Random Rambling Sunday: 7 Shades of Blue

Night, Fili here

I'll continue writing about double zippered pouch tonight. Recently, I tried different ways to make this pouch. I would like to find the simplest way to make this pouch so I won't get any headache any more. Finally, I get it! Now, the only thing that I need to do is to practice more. Fortunately, I got a chance to make this pouch for my friend's birthday present several days ago. She has two mobile phones and loves blue very much, so this is the result:

Random Rambling Sunday: Flowers, flowers everywhere

Hola, Lino here.

This is gonna be a very short post. I'm pretty much swamped in hundred of things that I have to do. Nevertheless, it's sunday, means it's Random Rambling Sunday time!

Today I would like to show you most of the flowers that we've made so far:

Random Rambling Sunday: Numbers don't lie

Night, Fili here :)

I'll talk about double zippers pouch this time.

One of our customer requested this double zipper pouch. We never made this kind of pouch before so we had to figure out how to make this pouch. After some trial and error, I finally figured how to make it. It's true when I said that I got headache in three days in row when I made this pouch. The result pouch was not very neat and symmetrical, it's really frustrating! After some examination here and there, I found out that my main problem is my inaccuracy. Accurate measurement is really important when making this pouch. Since I'm pretty careless with measurement, this pouch is really a challenging one. I'm someone who rely on my instinct too much!

There are still some flaw about the trick on making this pouch. There are some difficulties appear in some step so I need to find out more. Though it is still a long way to go to perfect the trick, for now, I've learned my lesson: accurate measurement helps a lot.

See you Later!

Random Rambling Sunday: Stands!

Dear fellow Crafters,

Sorry we still haven't prepared any new tutorials or post about stuffs that we made. However, there are pretty much lots of interesting stuffs that we are going to make. Hopefully in our next post,we can share a little bit about those stuffs :D

For our third Random Rambling Sunday series, I would like to share some photos from events where we took part.

The first one is our first bazaar in a hospital. We were pretty crazy preparing the products since we also have to made all the orders in the same time. Even though we didn't sell too many things, we learnt lots of things. We prepared pretty much lots of kanzashi, some bags and accessories.

Our next bazaar is in a university in Bandung, West Java. This time, we have more products to display. Unfortunately we don't have any documentation for this event. Do you see the "flower pot" on the left? We hang our flower on a tree branch and "plant" it in a flower pot.

Last but not least, with a help of a friend, we finally "expand" our market to Canberra, Australia. These are the photos of the products that we brought to Canberra.

And these are the photos of the stand at ANU Open Day 2013.

Uhhuuyy! We had fun doing bazaar and we're planning to do more. But at the same time, with my schedule with work, the amount of custom order and the lack of supporting staff, we are still struggling to fulfil all the demand for bazaar and reseller. However, we are trying our best to create and make more, including blog posts XD

Ciao!

Random Rambling Sunday 2: Make it Balanced!

Hello,

Now it's my turn, Fili, to ramble in this lovely sunday.

When I started 'Fili&Lino' with Lino, I slowly built my interest in mix-and-matching colors. I'm not used to it because I usually made something based on the need. I usually make something with simple design withut thinking much about the fabric. When we started working together, Lino kindly gave me advices on how to mix and match fabrics, what work best with the pattern, the colors, etc. At the moment, I have interest in Pastel color palette; the more I observed, the more I fell in love with it. I feel like each color has certain character and finding how these colors work with each other is a pretty interesting process. I learned that no matter how many colors or patterns combined, the most important thing is to keep the balance, and to find that balance, you just have to keep on trying until you find that perfect combination :D

That's all for now. Have a nice Sunday, everyone!

Random Rambling Sunday 1: A little thought about lots of things

Hi fellow crafters,

It's Lino here and I would like to start a new series on this blog called Random Rambling Sunday. Basically I would like to share what I thought about craft and other stuff on Sunday.
